Most softeners do one job. The Pro Plus runs your water through three stages, in sequence, inside a single tank — every time you turn on a tap.

It's a softener

First, the resin bed softens the water to zero soft — pulling out the calcium and magnesium that cause scale, film and appliance wear.

It's a refiner

Next, the soft water flows through an activated charcoal filter to remove unpleasant tastes and odors, including chlorine.

Finally, the water passes through a high-grade silica bed that removes dirt and polishes the water to a high clarity.

Stage 1

Macroporous cation resin

High-capacity 12–14% cross-linked resin removes hardness-causing minerals, with moderate iron removal capability and excellent resistance to chlorine.

Stage 2

Activated coconut shell carbon

Premium-grade carbon removes chlorine, unpleasant tastes and odor. A half cubic foot of it, built into the same tank.

Stage 3

Silica filter bed

An excellent high-flow-rate support bed and sediment filtration media. Provides the final polish to your water.

Regeneration

Brine tank with safety float

The salt tank recharges the resin bed on a schedule set by your actual water use. A grid plate keeps the salt above the water line and a safety float guards against overfill.

Why a metered valve matters. A timer-based softener regenerates on a fixed schedule whether you needed it or not — wasting salt and water on a light week, and running out of capacity on a heavy one. The Fleck 5600 meter counts the gallons you actually use and regenerates when the resin bed is genuinely spent.

Two things we'll say in Kinetico's favour. Their twin-tank design gives you soft water even while the system is regenerating, which a single tank like ours cannot do. And their valve is water-powered, so it keeps working in an outage. If either matters more to you than price and parts availability, they're a reasonable choice and we'd rather you hear that from us.

And one about the big-box unit. If you're handy, your water is on the milder end, and you're willing to own the install and the service yourself, it can work. What you're giving up is sizing based on a real test, a metered valve, and anyone to call.

Notes on the comparison

  1. Culligan and Kinetico installed prices reflect quotes we routinely see homeowners receive in Jacksonville, Tampa Bay and Orlando. Neither company publishes list pricing — both quote only after an in-home visit, and Culligan dealers are independent franchises — so your quote may differ from these figures. If you have a written quote from either, bring it to your water test and we'll compare it against ours line by line.
  2. Both brands use proprietary control valves serviced through their own dealer networks. This is not a comment on build quality — both are well-regarded systems — it is about who can get parts for them.
  3. Higher cross-linking increases a resin's resistance to oxidation from chlorine, which extends its working life. Resin manufacturers support the mechanism; we have not seen an independent figure putting a specific number of years on the difference, so we don't claim one.

About the Pro Plus

What makes this different from a regular softener?

A standard softener does one thing: it removes hardness minerals. The Pro Plus does three, in sequence, inside a single tank — softening with cation resin, refining through activated coconut shell carbon to remove chlorine taste and odor, and filtering through a silica bed that polishes the water for clarity. Three units in one, one installation.

Is 30,000 grains enough for my house?

For most Florida households, yes. Capacity is a function of your hardness and how much water you use, which is exactly what the free test tells us. If your water is at the top of the Jacksonville range, or you have an unusually large household, we'll tell you that before you buy rather than after.

Does it remove iron?

The resin has moderate iron removal capability, which handles the levels most municipal customers see. Heavy iron — more common on private wells — needs dedicated pre-treatment ahead of the softener. The water test will show us which situation you're in.

Will I have to keep buying salt?

Yes — ion exchange uses salt to regenerate the resin bed. The Fleck 5600 metered valve regenerates based on actual water use rather than a fixed timer, which keeps salt and water consumption down. We deliver salt locally so you're not hauling bags from the store.

How long does installation take?

Most whole-home installs are completed in a single visit, typically about half a day. Adding an under-sink RO system usually adds an hour or two.

What's covered by the 5-year warranty?

Replacement parts, including tanks, media and valves, are free of charge for five years from installation. For the first six months labor is covered too. The electrical transformer is covered for 1 year and the timer motor for 3. You need to return the registration card within 10 days of install, and warranty service has to be performed by an authorized technician.
