How to fix hard water

Questions to Ask a Water Treatment Company

A water softener is an investment in your home, and the company you choose matters as much as the equipment. Before you sign anything, it's worth asking a few questions so you know who you're working with and what you're getting.

The short answer: Ask how long the company has been in business, whether it's licensed and insured, what your water test found, what the total cost will be in writing, and what the warranty covers. Be cautious of companies with no track record, vague warranties or claims that the government requires their product.

8 Questions to Ask Before You Buy

1. How long have you been in business, and can I see your reviews?

A company's history and reputation tell you a lot. Look for a long track record, Google reviews and a Better Business Bureau rating.

2. Are you licensed and insured in Florida?

Make sure the company holds the licenses required in your area and carries liability insurance. It protects you and your home.

3. Is anyone on your team certified?

The Water Quality Association offers professional certifications, such as Certified Water Specialist. It's a good sign the company takes water treatment seriously.

4. What exactly did my water test find?

You should understand your results, including your hardness level and anything else that showed up. Ask whether the test could miss anything important for your home.

5. Do I need whole-home treatment, drinking water treatment or both?

A whole-home softener treats the water used throughout your house. A drinking water system treats water at the kitchen sink. The right answer depends on your test results and what matters most to you.

6. What is the total cost, in writing?

Ask for the installed price in writing, along with what you'll spend on salt and service over time. A clear number up front makes it easier to compare.

7. Who installs and services the system, and what does the warranty cover?

Find out whether the company uses its own installers and what happens if something needs service later. Read what the warranty covers and for how long.

8. Will you retest my water after installation?

A softener's results can be measured at your tap. A good company will be happy to show you the difference.

Red Flags to Watch For

What if the company has no track record?

Research a company's history before you buy. Florida has seen its share of fly-by-night water treatment companies that sell low-quality systems and disappear after the sale.

What if there's no service after the sale?

A water softener needs occasional service over its life. Be cautious of companies that don't offer repairs, maintenance or support after installation.

What if the warranty is vague?

If a company can't show you what its warranty covers in writing, that's a reason to slow down.

What if they say the government requires it?

Some companies claim a government agency requires or recommends their product. An EPA registration number only means a product is registered. It does not mean the EPA has tested or endorsed it.

What if they say your city water is unsafe?

Florida's city water systems treat their water to meet federal drinking water standards. Hard water is a cost and comfort issue, not a safety issue. Be wary of anyone who uses scare tactics to make a sale.
